INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE PRE-ADMISSION PROCESS
All patients are required to complete a Health History questionnaire for anesthesia purposes. You will receive a secure link via email and/or text to submit this information.
The form will include questions about your past surgeries, medications, allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. Please complete this form as soon as possible to avoid delays or cancellation of your procedure. Once reviewed, a nurse will email your personalized preoperative instructions. Pre-Operative Instructions for Patients
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
• Follow the instructions that you received from your surgeon or their office. Call your surgeon’s office if you have not received instructions from them.
• We will call you between 12pm and 3pm the afternoon prior to your surgery with a final arrival time to the center.
• Do not smoke, drink alcohol, take herbal supplements, or use illegal drugs (including marijuana) for at least 24 hours before your surgery.
FASTING INSTRUCTIONS
• STOP ALL foods/solids at midnight the night prior to surgery.
• You may consume only clear liquids until 2 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL at the surgery center.
Clear liquids include:water, energy drinks, soda pop, popsicles, apple juice, white grape juice, jello, plain chicken broth, black coffee/tea (NO cream or milk).
• ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BY MOUTH 2 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL TIME (including water, gum, and hard candy).
FOR COLONOSCOPY PATIENTS ONLY
• Follow the colon prep instructions provided by your doctor’s office. Call your doctor’s office if you do not have colon prep instructions.
• You will be on clear liquids for at least 24 hours the day before. No food/solids are allowed.
• You may consume clear liquids until 2 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL at the surgery center.
Clear liquids include:water, energy drinks, soda pop, popsicles, apple juice, white grape juice, jello, plain chicken broth, black coffee/tea (NO cream or milk).
Avoid red and purple liquids.
• ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BY MOUTH 2 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL TIME (including water, gum, and hard candy).
MEDICATION INSTRUCTIONS
• Take asthma/breathing, blood pressure/heart (see exceptions below), heartburn, pain, psychiatric/anxiety/depression, seizure, and thyroid medications. If you use inhalers, bring them with you. If you use home oxygen, bring your portable oxygen tank.
• DON’T take water pills.
• DON’T take medications ending in -pril or -tan the morning of surgery.
• DON’T take insulin or any diabetes medications the morning of your procedure.
• STOP your GLP-1 medication (at least 7days for injections and 1-7 days for pills) prior to surgery. You must be on a clear liquid diet the day before surgery (see clear liquids list above).
• If you are on aspirin or a blood thinner (Brilinta, Coumadin/warfarin, Effient, Eliquis, Plavix, Pletal, Pradaxa, Xarelto), obtain specific instructions from your doctor 5-7 days prior to the procedure.
• Call Pre-Admission at 248-922-4800 for questions regarding the medication instructions.
DAY OF SURGERY GUIDELINES
• Do not wear lotions, powders, perfumes, or colognes.
• Remove ALL jewelry (including wedding rings/bands and piercings).
• Wear comfortable clothes.
• Bring your photo ID, insurance card, and a form of payment.
• Make arrangements for childcare at home.
• Females 52 years of age and young: A urine specimen may be needed before your procedure. Please notify a front desk staff member before using the restroom.
ESCORT REQUIREMENTS
• A responsible adult must accompany you to the surgery center and must remain onsite during your entire stay. If this instruction is not followed, your case will be cancelled.
• NO Uber, Lyft, taxi, or similar services are permitted.
• A responsible adult must also stay with you for 24 hours after your procedure.
AFTER YOUR SURGERY
For the next 24 hours, do not:
• drive
• consume alcohol
• sign legal documents
IF YOU ARE FEELING ILL
If you have symptoms (cough, fever, body aches, etc.), call your surgeon’s office to reschedule.
INSURANCE AND PATIENT FINANCIAL INFORMATION: The Clarkston Surgery Center Business Office will verify your insurance prior to your procedure. If applicable, we will contact you in advance regarding your financial obligation. Please note that payment is due PRIOR to services being rendered. If you have any financial-related questions, please contact us before your procedure between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
